Chapter 18: The Groomsman
I told him to come to Bernie's.
It was Sunday, and the safest room I knew held a dozen people and a ham.
He arrived at half past four, a tall man in a gray overcoat with a lawyer's haircut.
His face had no color in it.
He stood on the stoop with his phone in both hands, like Anson with the pies.
Anson had come early and was already carving, with his sleeves rolled.
"You're Jared's friend," Bernie said at the door.
"I was," the man said.
"Then you can sit by me and eat."
He sat by her.
The mailman moved a candle out of his way and the furnace man passed the rolls.
Nobody asked who he was, and he looked at the table as if he'd never seen people be kind for free.
"I should say it now," he said, "or I won't."
I put down my fork.
"I'm Jared's best man. He asked me in August. I said yes before I knew what the job was."
He laid his phone on the cloth, face up.
