The best man took the microphone from me without a word.
His hand was steady, and that was what frightened me.
He turned to the room, and then he turned to the head table.
"I've known Jared for eleven years," he said. "I'm going to tell you something about him."
"Sit down," Jared said, through a grin.
The best man didn't blink.
"I've kept a hundred and forty-one messages from the groomsmen chat," he said. "I'm going to read you two."
"This is a toast, not a deposition," Jared said, standing. "Give me the mic."
The senior partner at table one, a silver-haired man with a napkin tucked in his collar, raised a hand.
"Let him finish."
The room waited.
Jared sat down.
"The first is from last Tuesday," the best man said. "It's about the honeymoon."
He read it in a flat, clear voice.
"'Two weeks in Positano, then I file in the spring. Whit keeps the shop.'"
"'Cal still takes my calls. I'll have her back by Easter.'"
