Chapter 24: Four Years
"Yes," Killian said.
He said it before I had finished the sentence.
"You haven't heard my terms."
"I'll sign all of them."
"One. You answer every question I ask, and you answer it all the way."
"Yes."
"Two. Sammy comes first, before the board, before the company, before me."
"Yes."
"Three. Once a day, out loud, you tell me one thing you need."
His mouth shook, and he nodded.
"Tonight I need you not to leave the hall," he said.
"I'm not going anywhere."
"Then I need to hold you."
I put the torn papers in his hand, and I walked into his arms.
That was a year ago.
On our fourth anniversary, at half past five, Sammy and I stood in the aisle of the corner pharmacy with a basket.
"They're out of real fireworks," Sammy said. "The man says it's a regulation."
"It's all right."
"Is this a regulation?"
He held up a box of sparklers marked INDOOR.
"It's a very good regulation," I said, and put it in the basket.
We carried it home along with a bag of candles and a lemon cake that Constance had dropped off and ordered us not to share with Killian until he apologized for something.
I set the dining room table with the good plates.
I put three candles in the middle and lit them.
Sammy sat on a chair by the window with his legs swinging and the box of sparklers on his knee.
He was six now, and he had lost both his front teeth.
His hair had grown, and the pale streak was as bright as ever.
