Chapter 20: The Grave
Holy Cross Cemetery sits on a hill in Yeadon with a view of the airport.
My father's stone is under a plane tree near the wall.
GIANNI MONTELLA, it says. BELOVED FATHER. 1971 to 2011.
I had come every year on my birthday, and every year there had been fresh flowers on the grave before I got there.
I had always thought it was kindness.
Santino stood by the car at the end of the gravel path with his hand on the gun under his coat.
I had told him to stay there.
He had said yes in a tone that meant no.
Carlo was already waiting at the stone.
He wore a long grey overcoat and held a bouquet of white roses, and his shoulders looked narrower than I remembered.
He didn't turn around.
"I used to come here on the first of every month," he said. "For fifteen years. I'd talk to him. I told him how you were doing in school. I told him about your first job. I told him you were going to marry my son."
"You told my father that."
"He would have hated it."
I stopped three feet away.
