Chapter 14: Killian's POV

Killian's POV

The vice president had six crackers on a paper plate and a look of great peace.

I had come up to sixteen with a resignation letter in my jacket and the green ledger under my arm.

"Killian," he said. "Sit. Have a cracker."

"Are those from the tins?"

"Tins two, three and four. I paid Miss Brannigan seven hundred and twenty dollars for them, and she made me a receipt."

I put the letter on his desk.

He read it with a cracker in his hand, and his eyebrows went up at the second paragraph.

"You approved Dennis's mileage sheets for eight months."

"Yes."

"You reported him."

"Yes."

"And then a woman who sits on your floor was punished for it for two years because you gave out the wrong name."

"Yes," I said. "She has had her lunch taken at noon for two years because of my mouth. I would like to leave before I do it to anyone else."

"Resignation is a lump sum," said the vice president.

I looked at him.

"I sat through Miss Brannigan's potluck. I learned things." He pushed the letter back across the desk. "I don't take resignations before lunch. Go away and be sorry on your own time."

"HR will need a statement."

"Write it, and I'll put it in your file. It will hurt."

"That's fair."

The door opened without a knock.

Cassidy came in carrying a banker's box, and she had put her coat on again.

"I'd like to enter something," she said.
