Chapter 19: Killian's POV
Killian's POV
The written warning was one page, and it was the shortest document I had ever been afraid of.
The HR director slid it across her desk at nine on Friday morning with a pen on top.
"Item one," she said. "Approval of expense sheets without review. Item two, misstatement of a source in a personnel matter. Item three, there isn't one, but I wanted it to look like a list."
"I'll sign."
"You'll lose the director role, which you already declined, and the raise that came with it."
"Yes."
"And you'll stay on fourteen as team lead, because the vice president says nobody else wants to explain the fridge to him."
I signed.
She took the page back and looked at my signature for a while.
"I've worked here eleven years," she said. "Nobody has ever paid for something they'd already gotten away with."
"It's not a good habit."
"It's a rare one," she said, and she put the page in a folder and did not say anything else.
I went downstairs to my desk.
Althea was across the floor in her blazer, with the green ledger open, running a pen down it with her lips moving.
She had slept at my apartment and left at six for her own clothes.
On my way out the door, she had taken a clementine from my fruit bowl, held it up, and said, "Owed."
I had never been so happy to be in debt.
She looked up as I passed and gave me a nod, small and private, and went back to the ledger.
