Chapter 17: Knock at Two

The knock came at two in the morning, and it was soft.

I was sitting up in the guesthouse bed with the lamp off, watching the panel in my eye.

C 1.3.

D 1.8.

The numbers had not changed in an hour.

I opened the door.

Camille stood on the step in a long gray robe, with her hair down over her shoulders and her feet bare on the cold stone.

I had never seen her hair down outside a bedroom.

She did not come in.

"I won't touch you," she said. "I only wanted you to know I'm here."

"It's two in the morning."

"I know." Her voice was rough. "Dalton came to my door tonight. He didn't knock. He stood in the hall and said he was cold, and I let him hold my hand for a minute."

My jaw tightened.

"I wanted to see what it felt like, now that I know," she said. "It felt like someone drinking from me. And when he left I was empty. I could hardly stand."

"Camille."

"Then I thought of you." She looked up. "It came back. All of it, just from your name. So I came."

The panel gave a small, warm jump.

C 2.4.

She stood there, waiting, with her hands hanging open at her sides.

She was a woman who had given orders since she was twenty-three, and she was waiting for me.

"Come in," I said.

She stepped over the threshold, and I shut the door.

The room was dark except for a stripe of light from the garden.

She stopped in the middle of it.

"I won't touch you until you ask," she said again. "I mean it. You told me what happened when I did."

"I know what I said."

"Then say what you want."

My heart was pounding.

I had been engaged to her for two years, and she had never once asked me what I wanted.

"I want you to take your robe off," I said.

She gave a shaky nod.

Her fingers found the knot at her waist, and untied it.
