Chapter 15: Reviews

By seven on Monday morning, Lacey's video had two million views.

I watched it at the cutting table, with Wanda reading over my shoulder and Davis standing behind us with his arms folded.

Lacey sat on her sofa in the soft cardigan and spoke straight to the camera.

"My dearest friend Elise is not well," she said. "She has been grieving for four years. Yesterday, she broke into my home and cut a lock off my property."

"Her property," Wanda said.

"Those medicines were hers," Lacey went on, wiping a tear. "She begged me to keep them where she couldn't see them, because it hurt too much. I did what a friend does. I kept the secret."

"She's turned it around," I said.

"The salt water is for my own treatment, which is private. The videos on that wall were made to help Elise stay hopeful. Someone cut them to look like something else."

"Someone," Davis said.

"I forgive her," Lacey finished, and her chin trembled. "Please send her love, not hate."

The comments under it were already in the thousands.

Half of them said Lacey was a saint.

The other half were arguing with the first half, which meant the story was going her way.

"She's going to take this shop apart," Wanda said.

My phone showed the studio's review page.

Overnight, it had gone from four-point-nine stars to two-point-one.

One review said: She fakes pregnancies for sympathy and steals from friends. Another said: The owner threw a ring at a children's charity and cut a lock off a widow's garage.

"Lacey isn't a widow," I said.

"These aren't real people," Wanda said. "Look. They all joined this morning. Not one of them has a profile picture."

There were two hundred and six.

I read thirty, and then I put the phone face down on the table.
