Chapter 18: Everything Signed

Brent stood in the doorway of my studio with a manila envelope in one hand and his cap in the other.

"I won't come past the mat," he said.

"Then talk from there."

Marilyn stepped around him on the way out, and stopped.

She put her hand on his sleeve for one second and said, "Do it properly."

Then she was gone, and the bell rang after her.

Wanda sat down at her machine with her back to us.

Davis was at the far end of the showroom, leaning on the walnut wall.

He didn't leave, and Brent didn't ask him to.

"I had my lawyer draw these up this morning," Brent said. "I didn't want to explain them. I want you to read them with someone you trust in the room."

He took four papers out of the envelope and laid them on the counter, one at a time.

"The first one is the divorce. I'm not contesting it. I'm not asking for the shop, or any part of what you've built since the day you opened."

"Brent."

"The second is the house. It's in both our names. It goes to you alone, free of the loan, which I'm paying off with the land my father left me by the lake."

I stared at him.

"That land was your dad's," I said.

"It's the only thing I own that's worth anything. I'd rather you had the roof."

"You loved that land."

"I did."

He put down the third paper.

"The twenty-five thousand from the fund goes back into the house account tonight, to be yours. The first thing I'll do tomorrow morning is have my name taken off it."

"And the fourth?"

He hesitated.

"The fourth is Garner Homeworks."

At the back, Davis lifted his head.

"The company is the trucks, the tools and the contracts," Brent said. "Eleven men work there. Every one of them is better at the job than I am, and half of them have been carrying me for years."
