Chapter 12: Nine Envelopes
There were nine envelopes, and I opened them standing up.
The first was from the florist who had caught me on the dock.
Fourteen thousand two hundred dollars, for the arch, the tables and three hundred peonies shipped from California.
It was billed to Ferrand Table Co., attention J. Ferrand.
I read it twice.
Then I opened the second, from the tent and rental company, and the number at the bottom was thirty-one thousand eight hundred.
I laid them out on the steel table in a row.
The band, nine thousand six hundred, half of it already paid.
The photographer, eight thousand nine hundred.
The string quartet that had played during the ceremony, six thousand four hundred.
The seamstress who had altered the dress and the shoe dyer who had matched them, four thousand eight hundred.
The valets and the waiters hired for the house, twelve thousand seven hundred.
The printer, who had made the invitations and the little silver favors, five thousand three hundred.
The fireworks company, which had also supplied the champagne tower, twenty-four thousand seven hundred.
Every invoice was addressed to me.
Every one of them said the same thing in the same box at the top: Claiborne and Ferrand wedding, April 18, charged to Ferrand Table Co. trade account.
My cooks started arriving at seven.
They came in through the back door and saw me standing over the table, and not one of them spoke.
I picked up a pencil and added the numbers on the back of an envelope.
My hand did not shake. It surprised me.
