Chapter 13: You Signed, Dear
I did not answer Anson.
I stood in the alley behind the commissary with the phone against my ear and listened to him say "Babe?" three times.
Then I ended the call, went back inside, and squared the nine envelopes into a stack.
"Where are you going?" my oldest cook asked.
"To Bellwood."
"Take somebody with you."
"I'm taking the paperwork," I said. "It's better company."
I drove the van up the bluff with the envelopes on the passenger seat, and I did not turn the radio on.
The florist's van was gone from the circular drive, and so were the white chairs.
The front door stood open to let the morning in, the way it had on my wedding day.
I walked into the front hall, and Anson was halfway down the staircase in a golf shirt, holding his phone.
He stopped on the stair when he saw the stack in my arms.
"Joelle. I was about to call you back."
"Come down here."
He came down two steps and stayed there, with one hand on the banister.
