Chapter 15: The Man I Hired

"It isn't mine," Miles said.

He stood in my kitchen at noon, still in yesterday's shirt, and he said it before I could ask.

"I know."

"I have never touched her. Not once. I met her at a restaurant, I watched her laugh at a waiter's tie, and I drove home."

"Miles, I know."

He let out a long breath and sat down at my small table, where my mother's old tea tin held the pepper.

"Then I have to tell you something," he said, "before she finds a way to tell you first."

I put two mugs on the table and waited.

"After the third month of messages, I hired a man. A private investigator."

My hands stopped.

"I wanted to know who owned the account. He traced the photos to a ferry, and the ferry to you. Your name, your address, where you worked." He didn't look away. "I did that without asking you."

"You had a man follow me."

"For four days. Then I fired him and went to the dock myself."

I looked at him for a long moment.

The old Leah, the one who died, would have thrown the mug.

She would have decided that a man who investigated her was a man who wanted to own her.

"Why are you telling me now?"

"Because I think you'll leave when you hear it," he said. "I think you wrote to me from behind a screen because you didn't want to be found. And I found you anyway."
