Chapter 4: Elliott Has Notes

Elliott had reserved a study room on the second floor of the library, and he had put a sign on the door that said OCCUPIED.

He had also laid out two pencils, two highlighters and a stack of index cards, evenly spaced.

I put my bag of snacks in the middle of the table.

"I made sandwiches," I said. "Cut in four triangles."

He studied them for a moment.

"Is there a reason for four?"

"It's a rule for Caleb."

"Of course it is." He picked one up. "It's good."

"Thank you. What are we studying?"

"Statistics for policy analysis."

"Okay."

"Right." He took out his phone, and I saw him scroll to a note and flatten his shoulders.

Then he looked at me across the table and read from the screen.

"Your eyes are," he said, and stopped.

"Are what?"

"Brown." He squinted at the phone. "No. The note says, your eyes are the color of insert color here."

I held out my hand. He gave me the phone.

The note was titled COMPLIMENTS, and it had a list of eleven items, three of them crossed out.

"Elliott," I said gently, "this is a fill-in-the-blank."

"I wrote it at two in the morning."

"What would you say if you looked at me and didn't read it?"
