Chapter 5: Fang

Caleb walked me home without saying a word for the first four blocks.

"What did you talk about?" he finally asked.

"Statistics."

"For two hours."

"Elliott has a lot of index cards."

"Did he say anything about me?"

"No," I said. "Should he have?"

He didn't answer, but he walked closer to the curb than to me, which is how I knew he was thinking.

At my door, he said, "Don't spend so much time with Elliott. He's boring."

Caleb was the one who had sent him.

I kissed his cheek and said, "Whatever you say, babe."

He looked deeply, personally frustrated, and I went inside to sleep like a baby.

The next morning, Asher found me outside the seminar room.

He was leaning against the wall beside the door with one boot crossed over the other, and the pose was meant to look casual.

"Hey, Sabrina," he said, in a low voice.

"Hi, Asher."

"I was thinking about you."

"That's nice."

"No, it isn't. You're a pest." He frowned and checked something behind his hand. "But I was thinking about you anyway."

He pushed off the wall to take a step toward me, and the wall was not a wall.

It was the door of the supply closet, and it swung inward.

Asher went through it backward and landed on a mop bucket.

Everyone on campus called him Fang, and nobody had ever called him graceful.
