Chapter 12: Eight Years

I took my hand out of hers.

"Get out," I said.

Sabrina did not move. She sat on the stool with her gloves on her knee, and her face smoothed out slowly until there was nothing on it at all.

I had never seen that face before. In seven years of friendship she had never once let it show.

"I wondered how long it would take you," she said.

"Take me to what?"

"To stop pretending you don't know what I mean."

Behind her, Jerome came down the stairs one step at a time.

"Sabrina," he said. "She asked you to leave."

"I'm going, Jerome. I'm only enjoying it." She stood and put on her gloves, finger by finger. "You've changed a lot of things this week, Hal. The phone. The staircase. Your father-in-law's heart."

"What do you know about his heart?"

"That nobody ever did compressions on him last time until it was too late." She smiled. "I noticed that on Sunday. I thought, she's good."

The stove ticked.

I stood up too, and my legs were not quite steady.

"You were there," I said. "In the courtroom."

"Of course I was. I was the star witness."

"You cried."

"I cried beautifully." Sabrina picked up her scarf. "It was the best performance of my life, and I got eight years for you out of it. I thought you'd at least appreciate the craft."

Jerome said, very quietly, "What is she talking about?"

"Nothing," I said. "She's lying."

"I'm not," said Sabrina. "Ask her about the cough."
