Chapter 5: Three in the Morning

Teddy Lindahl rang the front doorbell at ten the next morning, carrying a laptop bag and a pastry box.

Miriam was at the office. Colby had gone to the hospital for his blood work.

The housekeeper let him in because he said he was an old classmate, which was true.

"You look like hell," Teddy said, and put his arms around me so carefully that it hurt more than the hug in Miriam's office had.

"You look the same," I said. "You still dress like a student."

"I'm a systems administrator. This is my professional hoodie."

Arlene took the pastry box into the kitchen. Teddy sat on the edge of the guest bed and opened the laptop bag on his knees.

"Your phone's dead, so I brought you this." He held up a cheap new phone, already charged. "Your sister called my footage fake."

"How did you hear?"

"Arlene called me last night from her own phone. She said you'd been called a fake."

"Arlene is faster than the news," I said, and then I coughed for a while.

Teddy waited. He had waited for me through two years of college and three years of silence.

"I have the drive in my car," he said. "Both the video files and the server log. The log has the school's own time stamps on every clip. It can't be forged on a laptop."

"Keep it in the car."

"Cedric."

"Keep it where it is until I'm dead."
