Chapter 6: You Said That at Twenty

Miriam ate her toast standing up at the kitchen counter, the way she had done every morning since our father died.

I came down the stairs slowly, one step at a time, with Arlene behind me.

"I need to tell you one thing," I said. "After that I won't raise it again."

"If this is about the video, I have a meeting."

"It's about the night you took the pills."

Her hand went to her cuff. She did not seem to know she had done it.

"Colby didn't find you," I said. "I did."

The housekeeper dropped a spoon in the sink and quietly left the room.

"I found you on the bathroom floor. I called 911 from the phone in this kitchen. I gave them the address."

"Then I sat on the floor next to you until the paramedics came."

Miriam put the toast down.

"You said that to me once before," she said.

"Yes."

"You were twenty. You were lying in a recovery bed with half of your liver gone, and the first thing you said to me was that."

"I said it because I'd waited six years for somebody to ask."

"You said it because the nurses had told you Colby was getting all the flowers." Her voice shook. "I remember exactly. You wanted the one thing he had, and I wouldn't let you have it."

"I didn't want anything."

"Colby talked to the paramedics. He told them what he saw. They put his name on the report."

"He talked because I couldn't." I held the rail. "I couldn't make a sound for nine days. You said so yourself last night."
