Chapter 16: Wolf and Dragon

Chris never got his turn, because Mr. Hunter caught him by the shoulder.

"She hasn't called you yet," the dragon said.

"She hasn't called you either."

"I'm on my knees. I was here first."

"You were here second, after the fox."

"Chris," I said.

Neither of them heard me.

Chris's claws came out, and Mr. Hunter's eyes went gold, and the two of them hit the floor together.

They rolled across my rug in a tangle of bare skin.

Chris's silver streak had spread to half his hair, and his teeth were long.

Black scales rippled up the dragon's forearms.

Matt scrambled up onto the bed beside me with his legs crossed.

"This is the best night of my life," he said.

"Matt."

"Sorry. Yes. Great."

A lamp went over and nobody picked it up.

Chris got an arm around the director's neck, and Mr. Hunter got his knee into Chris's ribs, and neither of them was really trying to hurt the other.

They were laughing.

I had never heard Mr. Hunter laugh, and it was low and wrecked, and it startled him as much as me.
