Chapter 4: One King

The room had one king bed, one armchair and one window that looked out at the parking lot.

Caleb set our bags on the dresser and stood looking at the bed.

"I'll take the chair," he said.

"The chair is six inches too short for you."

"I've slept in worse."

"You've slept in worse because you're stubborn. We're adults." I kicked off my wet shoes. "The bed is the size of a parking space. Stay on your side."

"Fine."

"Fine."

I took my bag into the bathroom and shut the door and leaned against it for a full minute.

My blouse was still wet.

I peeled it off and hung it over the shower rod, and then my skirt, and I stood in my underwear looking at myself in the mirror.

My face was pink and my hair was a wreck.

I looked flushed, wild, and completely unravelled.

I had only brought a sleep shirt, because my father believes in packing light.

It was an old grey T-shirt from my college rowing team, and it came halfway down my thighs.

I pulled it on and opened the door.

Caleb was sitting on the edge of the bed with his shoes off and his shirt unbuttoned halfway.

His hair was wet, and he had been looking at his hands.

He looked up.

I watched his eyes go to my bare legs and stay.

"Eyes front, Mercer," I said. "You'll go blind."

For a second I thought I'd gone too far.

He went completely still.

Then a slow flush spread up his neck, and his mouth started to move at one corner.

"That's mine," he said.

"It was. I'm keeping it."

"Lena."

"What? You said it. You said it to my face, standing there with your hand still..." I stopped and took a breath. "Standing there. I figured I'd return it."
