Chapter 11: Ten Minutes
Four hundred people were watching me, and I realized I had stopped being afraid of them.
"Play it," I said.
Marilyn's face changed.
"I'm sorry?"
"Play all of it. Every night." I looked at the chief instructor, then at Lottie, holding the phone high with both hands. "I cried for my grandmother and I talked to myself and I said some things about people I didn't like. There's nothing in it I'm ashamed of, except that someone was listening."
The silence on the field turned, slowly, into something else.
Somebody in the third row began to clap.
It was one person, and then it was four, and then a ragged wave of it went across the grass.
Marilyn's wrist went slack in her husband's hand.
"That is enough," the chief instructor said, and the clapping stopped.
He took Marilyn's phone from Lottie, took Sabina's pink one, and put them both into the breast pocket of his jacket.
"These are evidence," he said. "No one touches them. Mrs. Pelham, you and your husband will come with me to the dean's office."
"I will not," Marilyn said.
Albert let go of her wrist.
"I'll come in a minute," he said. "I need ten minutes first."
"Albert."
"Ten minutes, Marilyn."
He did not raise his voice.
She stared at him, and then she walked stiffly to the SUV and got in the passenger seat and shut the door.
The tinted window went up.
Albert turned to me.
"Miss Wrenfield. Abby. Will you give me ten minutes?"
I looked at Lottie, and she nodded firmly.
