Chapter 6: Seven Twelve

"You fixed it," I said.

"One phone call." Bennett stepped past me into the apartment and set the roses on the counter next to Mitchell's coffee mug. "They'll call you tomorrow."

"Which call?"

"Does it matter?"

"It matters to me."

He turned and took my face in his hands, warm and sure of himself.

"Val. You were hurt. I couldn't stand it. I'd have done anything."

Mitchell took his keys off the counter.

He did not look at his brother, and he did not look at me.

"Chicken's in the fridge," he said, and left.

The door closed.

Bennett watched it for a second.

"He's a strange guy," he said. "Always has been. Don't let him get in your head."

Then he opened the little black box.

The ring inside was a square diamond on a thin band, and it was beautiful.

I had looked at rings like it in windows, on my lunch break, and told no one.

"I was going to ask you at the party," Bennett said. "Right at the rail, at eight. After the toast. Lila ruined that too."

I looked at the ring and felt nothing but cold.

"Not now," I said.

"I know. I know, Val. I'm not asking now." He closed the box and slid it into his pocket. "I'll hold on to it. I just want you to know where I stand."

He kissed my forehead and left, and I stood in the middle of the room for a long while.
