Chapter 7: Dinner for Two
"Don't go," Mitchell said.
He stood in my kitchen on Thursday evening with his arms crossed, and Phoebe sat on the counter eating cereal and watching us both.
"I'm going," I said. "He invited me to dinner. He'll talk if I let him."
"He'll lie."
"Then I'll hear what he lies about."
"Val." It was the first time he had shortened my name. "You'll be alone in his apartment."
"I'll be in the same city as you, with my phone, and you'll be outside."
He looked at the ceiling.
"Fifteen minutes and I come up," he said.
"Thirty."
"Twenty."
"Done," said Phoebe, from the counter. "Go get him, killer."
Bennett's apartment was on the twentieth floor of a glass building by the river.
He opened the door in an apron.
The table was set with candles, and a whole salmon sat on the stove.
"I wanted tonight to be easy," he said, and kissed my cheek. "Sit. Tell me what you want to drink."
I sat.
At minute twenty I sent Mitchell a thumbs-up under the table.
Bennett talked for forty minutes, warm and funny and full of plans.
He said his mother would come around, that Lila was fragile and needed time, and that I should think of her as a sister I'd never had to choose.
"She's the one who accused me," I said.
"She's confused. You know how she gets." He refilled my glass. "I've known her since I was six. She can't help it."
"She told people I pushed her."
"And you didn't, and I believe you, and that's why I made one phone call." He put his hand over mine. "Let me look after you, Val. You've been strong for so long. You don't have to be."
I looked at his hand.
