Chapter 10: Bram's POV

Bram's POV

I waited outside the guard house with my back against the wall.

Inside, Linnet Greer sat on a cot under four guards.

She wasn't crying anymore. She was looking at the floor.

I'd known her six years, and I hadn't known her at all.

Rosalind had gone to sit by her mother.

I had let her go, though everything in me wanted to follow.

For six years I had watched small hurts appear on Rosalind's body.

A burn on her wrist. A bruise at the temple. Once, a wrapped rib she said she'd bumped on a door.

I had taken every answer she gave me.

Today I knew what it was, and I knew how many times.

I counted them on the walk from the moon hall to the guard house, and I stopped at forty.

The door of the guard house opened.

Rosalind's father came out.

He had gone gray in a single night, and his hands shook.

"Let me see her," he said to the guards.

"The Alpha's order," said the nearest. "Nobody."

"She is my daughter."

"Beta," I said.

He turned.

I stepped away from the wall.

"You're going to go into that room and tell her to say it was the wolf," I said. "You're going to hold her hand and tell her you forgive her. And she'll say it again, in front of the pack."

"I'm trying to save her."

"She tried to kill your daughter."

"She tried to kill Rosalind," he said, and it was a stupid thing to say, and he knew it as it left his mouth.
