Chapter 11: What Tobin Saw

Rosalind's POV

Mother woke at sunrise.

I was sitting at the foot of her bed, and Tobin was on the other side, pale and unshaved, holding her good hand.

Her eyes opened slowly.

She looked at the ceiling, and then at both of us.

"Where is she?" she whispered.

"In the guard house," Tobin said.

"Is she hurt?"

"No."

Mother shut her eyes.

I watched her do it.

She had been stabbed through the chest, and her first question was still about Linnet.

I didn't feel what I had expected to feel.

I felt tired.

Tobin leaned down.

"Mother, the healer ran Linnet's blood against the ledger."

Her eyes flew open.

"No."

"The Alpha ordered it."

"No, no, he can't." She tried to sit up and fell back, gasping. "Tobin, you have to stop him."

"Mother."

"Please."

"Mother, I know she isn't adopted."

It came out of him very quietly.

He wasn't looking at me. He was looking at her hair, at the white streak above her left ear.

Mother went still.

"Say it," he said. "I'd rather hear it from you."

For a long time the only sound was the lamp.

Then the door opened, and the Alpha came in, with Bram behind him and Father behind Bram.

Father stopped at the foot of the bed.

His hands were fists.

"Odette," he said.

She turned her head and looked at him.

Her face crumpled slowly, from the mouth outward.

"I was twenty-nine," she said.

Nobody moved.

"Tobin was four. You were away on the northern patrol for two months. I went to the river for water." Her voice shook. "He was a rogue. He came out of the trees. I didn't know his name, then. I learned it later."
