Chapter 5: The Dark Room
I went straight to the stair end and told them.
"My mother is in my room. She's sitting in the dark, wearing my wrap."
Bram's face went still.
"Then we take her out."
"If she screams, Linnet hears it and doesn't come. Then I have nothing to show the Alpha."
"Rosalind."
"I'm not asking you to leave her there. I'm asking you to watch that door."
The old elder with the cane looked from me to the door of my room.
"Her mother will be the first thing she sees," he said slowly. "Linnet will stop on the threshold."
"She will," Bram said, and I could see he didn't believe it either.
I went to the door anyway, and knocked softly.
"Mother?"
"Go to bed, Rosalind," she said from the dark. "I said I'd see to it."
"Please come out."
"Go to bed."
Her voice was steady.
It was the voice she used when she had already decided.
I stepped back.
"She won't come," I said.
"Then we do it your way," said the elder from the east lodge. "We take her at the door, the moment she touches it."
"She'll have the knife in her hand by then," I said. "She wore gloves at supper. The handle will be wrapped."
"Good," said the old elder. "Then there will be no question."
Bram sent for the healers.
I had asked for that at dusk, before any of it began.
Two of them came up the back stairs in coats over their nightclothes and went into the linen room beside the guest room, with their bags, and shut the door quietly.
