Chapter 4: Orchard Street

I was on the bakery's loading dock at 6:10 with flour on my sleeve and a sheet pan in my hands.

Lark had brought me a change of clothes and met me in the hotel lobby at five.

Dominic's driver had been waiting at the curb when I came out.

"Mr. Falcone said to take you wherever you like," he'd said.

"I'm taking a bus."

"Miss, he said you'd say that. There's a second car."

"I'm taking a bus," I'd said again, slower.

The driver had stepped aside. He had also followed the bus for six blocks before I turned around on the sidewalk and stared at him until he made a U-turn.

I didn't think I had won.

I thought Dominic had let me.

My wrists still felt it.

There was no mark under my sleeve, only the memory of silk.

I kept pressing my thumb into the place where it had been.

"You okay, kid?" my boss asked from the ovens. She was sixty and as wide as the door, and she had known Ethan for two years.

"Rough night," I said.

"I saw the stream. Half the neighborhood sent it to me." She slid a tray of croissants in. "He's an idiot."

"Yes."

"If he walks in here, I'll hit him with the peel."

"Please don't. I want to do it."

She grinned at me.

At 7:40 the front bell rang and the morning line was out the door.

Ethan walked in with a bouquet of white roses.

I saw him through the pass-through, and my hands stopped on the dough.

He looked terrible. His suit was the same one from the party. His eyes were swollen, and he hadn't shaved.
