Chapter 15: The Preview

In the corridor Lachlan had said "Ansel" once, slowly, like a word he was checking for a crack.

Then he had folded the guest list into his pocket and walked back to the boardroom without another question.

That silence was worse than any question, and it lasted nine days.

The preview was on the thirtieth floor, in a long white room with forty staff and no press.

The woman in the wool coat had lent my terrace painting back for the Showcase.

Two porters carried it in on a cart, and I stood on the ladder myself and hung it on the east wall.

Nobody else touched the frame.

When I climbed down, the room was watching me.

"Is that her?" someone whispered. "The one from the paper?"

"She's the ex-wife," someone else whispered. "Lachlan's ex-wife."

I wiped my hands on a cloth and kept my back straight.

Then a woman walked in from the side door with a tablet under her arm and a badge on her lapel.

She was small, with a dark bob and gray-green eyes, and she stopped when she saw me.

It was Daphne.

I had not seen her since the afternoon I found her in my bed.

The badge said she was Cordelia's assistant.

She went white.

"Imogen," she said. "I didn't know you were..."

"Hello, Daphne."

The whole floor had gone silent. The porters had stopped. A girl with a clipboard had stopped halfway through a sentence.

I could have turned my back.

I thought about the night she had patted the sofa cushion beside her and told me he would be home by ten.

"Everyone, this is Daphne," I said, in a voice that carried to the windows. "She was my roommate in college. She lived in my guest room for months, and I fed her, and I paid half her bills."
