Chapter 6: The Crit
"Imogen, I am so sorry," my old teacher said.
His voice broke on every word.
"There are three men outside my door with cameras. My wife won't leave the kitchen."
"You didn't do anything," I said. "I did this to you."
"Child, nobody did anything. Listen to me."
He blew his nose.
"That afternoon I told you your paintings were the best I had seen in thirty years, and I cried in front of you."
"I know."
"I want to say it to every one of those men."
"Please don't," I said. "They'll only ask you the wrong questions."
"Then I'll tell you what I found out this morning," he said. "The studio across the street from mine stood empty for a year."
"So?"
"Someone rented it two months before you wrote to me. They paid for the whole stretch in cash, and they kept the blinds shut and a camera in the window."
My stomach turned.
"Imogen," he said, "whoever took that photograph knew you were coming before I did."
I sat for a long time with the phone on my knee.
I had told no one I was going.
On Monday I went to class.
By ten everyone in the studio had seen the article.
I knew because a boy near the door held his phone up to a girl and laughed.
"Merrick's wife," he said. "That's the one."
They looked at me, and they all looked away.
The instructor cleared her throat at the front of the room.
"Imogen, a donor to the program called this morning," she said. "She asked whether we're comfortable with the attention."
