Chapter 14: Friday Night
The ballroom held four thousand people, and every one of them wore a white T-shirt.
Penelope and I came in through the service door at the back.
We stood behind the sound booth, where the lights were low.
On stage, a screen the size of a house showed my face.
It was the photo from the night she won.
Under it, in red letters, were the words HE TOOK EVERYTHING.
The crowd cheered when Sonia walked out.
She wore white, and the hem hid her ankle monitor.
She crossed to the microphone slowly and let them scream for her.
"I'm not supposed to be here," she said. "My lawyers begged me to stay home. But I couldn't leave you with a lie."
Four thousand people made the same sad sound.
"For six years I belonged to a man who told me I was nothing," she said. "He wired me ten thousand dollars when I walked away, and called it a goodbye."
"Shame!" a woman shouted.
"Tonight you hear him in his own voice."
She nodded to the booth.
The tech pressed a key.
My voice filled the hall.
"I'd pay anything to keep my father's name out of this."
Then a second clip, in the same voice.
"Make her sign it. I don't care how."
Then a third.
"If she talks, bury her."
The crowd gasped.
I felt Penelope's hand close around my wrist.
"I never said any of that," I whispered.
"I know," she said. "She cut one sentence out of eleven different calls."
On the screen, Sonia wiped her eyes.
"That is the man," she said. "That is who sent the authorities to my door."
"Free Sonia!" someone yelled, and the whole floor took it up.
It shook the floor under our feet.
Jace walked onto the stage.
He wore the same wrinkled white shirt from the porch.
His hands shook on a folded paper, and Sonia put an arm around him and kissed his cheek for the cameras.
"This is Jace," she said. "He was Wesley's project too. Jace, would you tell them?"
