Chapter 18: Northlight Speaks
Wesley's POV
I had never given an interview in my life.
For six years, the only face my company showed the world was a logo on a screen.
That morning I sat in a folding chair in the hospital atrium under two camera lights.
A morning-show host sat across from me, and a producer counted down with his fingers.
"We're live," he said.
"Mr. Thornton," the host said. "Is it true you are the chairman of Northlight Media Group?"
"Yes."
"Why hide it?"
"I wanted her to love me with no money in the room," I said. "It was a mistake."
The host blinked.
She had expected a statement, and I had given her a sentence.
"Her fans say you destroyed a woman," she said.
"I reported her taxes. I also paid every one of them for six years, and she knew it."
"And your father?"
I looked past the lights.
Penelope stood against the far wall with my father's wheelchair beside her.
He had insisted on being brought down.
He wore his own bathrobe, and a nurse had given up arguing with him.
"My father is a retired electrician," I said. "He wired half of Queens before I was born. Three weeks ago, a crowd of strangers shook his bed until his heart stopped."
The host's hand went to her throat.
"Some of those strangers believed a story," I said. "I'm told some of them are in this building."
A murmur went through the crew.
The glass doors at the end of the atrium opened.
The young woman from the fan forum walked in, in a gray tank top.
Behind her came forty people, in gray, white and no shirts at all, and every one of them carried flowers.
They stopped in a ragged line at the edge of the lights.
The young woman crossed the floor to my father's chair.
She was shaking.
"Sir," she said. "I run the board where they planned it. I want to say it to your face."
My father looked up at her, in no hurry at all.
