Chapter 10: The First Watch

"No," I said.

Claire's eyes went wide.

"I didn't do this to hurt you," I said, quietly, so that it stayed between us. "I did it because I'm tired, Claire. That's all."

Her mouth opened, and nothing came out.

Behind her, Darius had recovered his smile. He leaned in and murmured something I could not hear.

Claire flinched away from him without looking.

Danielle's hand closed around my arm.

"We're leaving," she said.

"Ms. Rowan," Darius started.

"Not one word, Mr. Cranston."

She said it very pleasantly, and he stopped.

She walked me down the center aisle with her hand wrapped around my sleeve.

The Danforth staff turned their faces away as we passed, and the others watched us with open interest.

I could feel three hundred pairs of eyes on my back.

She did not stop until we were through the doors and out of the hotel and standing on the wide pavement in the noon light.

Then she let go.

She was angry. I could see it in her jaw.

"Do you know what that was?" she said. "Do you know what I wanted to do in there?"

"I could guess."

"She stood there and let that boy tell a ballroom you were a spy. After what she did to you." She pushed her hair back with one hand. "I wanted to throw something."

"Danielle."

"I know. I didn't."

"Danielle, thank you," I said. "But you don't need to rescue me."
