Chapter 13: What She Thought
"The inn in Maine," Claire said. "The second morning."
She said it to the grave, not to me.
"You were reading the menu. I thought, I wish he'd sit by the window. Before I had said a word, you picked up your plate and moved."
I remembered.
I had thought it was the luckiest coincidence of my life.
"That night you told me what you could hear," she said. "You were so scared I'd think you were crazy."
"You said it was wonderful."
"I did." Her mouth shook. "Then I looked at your face and thought the sweetest thing I knew. And you cried, Nathan. You were so happy."
"You planned it."
"I had been planning what to say since I was eight."
She wiped her eyes with her wrist.
"When I came home, every true thing I said made someone cry or leave the room. So I practiced the other kind. Then I married a man who could hear me without my having to say it."
"Edith knew."
"I told her the week we got back. I wanted one person to know why I was strange."
I looked at the white rose on the coffin.
"She asked me to ask you something," I said.
"I know what it was."
"Then answer it. What do you think about when I'm not in the room?"
She was quiet for a long time.
The wind moved the umbrella handle that Darius had left leaning on a stone.
"I count," Claire said.
"Count what?"
"The hours until you come home. The people you talk to. How many of them could take you somewhere I couldn't find you."
Her voice was flat now.
