Chapter 20: The Parking Garage
Morven's POV
I took the service stairs down to the hotel garage because they were empty.
The concrete was cold through my thin shoes.
I stood against a pillar, in a green dress, with my arms wrapped around myself, and I tried to hear anything except what he had said.
I am in love with her.
He had said it into a microphone.
In front of three hundred people, and his mother, and a woman who had once been his wife.
It was the sort of thing a man says when he has been hurt long enough, and I knew exactly what that was worth.
Big, quiet gestures, I had told him in the corridor.
I had not said what came after.
The gesture ends, and he goes home, and the person he went home to is the one who was there.
A car idled at the far end of the garage with its lights on.
It was a gray sedan, and there was a man in the front seat, and a woman in a red dress in the back.
The back window slid down an inch.
"Dr. MacDonough," Veronica said.
I did not move.
"They're letting me make a phone call," she said. "I thought I would make it to you."
"I'm not interested."
"You will be." Her face in the gap was calm and very tired. "I know what you're thinking. You're thinking he meant it."
"He did."
"He always means it." She smiled a little. "For nine years he meant it. He means everything he says while it's happening. That's the thing about Nolan. He's a kind man who needs something to be kind to."
"I'm not a stray."
"You keep spare scrubs in your car for strays. Everybody knows it." The window went down another inch. "In a year he'll have a new cause, and you'll be the woman who understood, and he will look at you with so much gratitude that you won't even notice you're alone."
