Chapter 22: The Real Roast
The second pig roast at the Frawley farm had a hundred and ten people at it.
I took in the crowd as I came up the drive.
Last time there had been forty, and a knife, and a wife in a bloody apron.
This time there were folding tables in the yard, and a banner on the barn that said WELCOME BACK DOC in marker, and children running in snowsuits.
Morven parked her hatchback behind a fire truck.
"Your hand's in your pocket," she said.
"It's cold."
"You've had it there since Camden."
"It's very cold in Maine."
She looked at me sideways, and I took the hand out and held the car door for her.
My father had slipped a small velvet box into my coat on the porch the morning we left.
He had said only, "Your mother approves," and gone back to his keel.
I had not taken it out since.
Mrs. Frawley sat at the head of the biggest table in a wheelchair with a quilt, wearing her knitted hat.
She had color in her face.
"There he is," she said, and held out both hands. "And there's the girl."
"I'm thirty-two," Morven said, bending to kiss her cheek.
"You're a girl to me. Sit. Eat. You're all bones."
I was handed a plate by a stranger and a beer by another.
A man in a fire company jacket slapped my shoulder so hard that my plate jumped.
"Doc!" he said. "The fellow from the barn floor wants a word."
I spent half an hour being thanked.
The man from the barn floor was there with his cane, and his wife held my hand in both of hers and said nothing at all, which was the best thing anyone said.
