Chapter 6: The Valve

I read the scans at Morven's kitchen table until after midnight.

The valve at the bottom of Mrs. Frawley's heart had narrowed to a slit.

It was severe, and it was close to the edge.

Dale's wife sat across from me with her knitted hat in her lap, and watched me read.

"Be straight with me," she said. "I raised four kids. I don't faint."

"You need the valve replaced in the next two weeks," I said. "If it waits until spring, you may not have a spring."

"That's what the cardiologist said."

"He was right."

"Then I'll stop pretending I'm not scared," she said, and her husband took her hand across the table.

Dale had not said much since we sat down.

He kept turning his cap around on his knee.

"Can you do it?" he asked.

"I'm suspended. I can't operate in that building until the suspension is lifted."

"Then who can?"

"The next surgeon on the schedule is booked for three weeks," I said. "But I'll find out in the morning if there's an emergency slot. Morven can admit her through the ER, and that gets her in the door."

"She's the boss of the ER," Dale told his wife.

"I'm the chief," Morven said, from the sink. "Nobody's the boss of the ER. Not even her."

We drove in at seven the next morning in two cars.

Mrs. Frawley sat in the front seat of mine with her folder on her knees.

"This isn't how I wanted to meet your people," she said to me.
