Chapter 27: Mara
Cain's POV
She had asked me to say her name with everything I had behind it.
It was all I had.
I stood between her knees with my hands under her sweater, and I could not find another word.
"Mara," I said.
I didn't say it to get her attention, or to win an argument, or to be polite.
I said it with nothing in front of it.
She shut her eyes.
"There," she said, very quietly. "That one."
"I will say it again."
"I'm counting on that."
She pulled the sweater over her head herself and dropped it on the counter, next to the scattered pages of my contract.
Her skin was warm and freckled to the collarbone.
I kissed the freckles one at a time, because I had wanted to for a year and I was done being fast.
Her hands went to my tie.
"Clause nine," I said against her shoulder. "Physical contact outside appearances is not part of the role."
"I'm not in a role."
"Neither am I."
"Then take this off."
She pulled the tie loose and dropped it, and began on my buttons.
She was not gentle with them.
One went across the floor and rolled under the paint shelf.
"That was a good shirt," I said.
"Put it on the ledger."
I laughed, and she stopped with her hands flat on my chest and watched it happen.
"You do that so rarely," she said.
"I do it with you."
"I know," she said. "That's why I'm looking."
I picked her up.
She wrapped herself around me with a little breath of surprise and I carried her through the dark store, past the bins and the aisle of hinges, to the back stairs.
