Chapter 14: Closing Time

Cass's POV

I locked the front door of the Anchor Tavern at one in the morning and flipped the sign.

Then I turned off every light except the one over the pool table.

Then I texted both of them the same thing.

Tavern. Now. Or I never speak to either of you again, and I mean it.

Dell was there in ten minutes, with wet hair and a face I knew.

Sabina was there shortly after, in her gray coat, with her purse held against her stomach.

They stood on opposite sides of the bar.

I stood behind it, because the bar had always been the one place I felt in charge.

"Sit," I said.

Neither of them sat.

"Fine. Stand." I put three shot glasses on the wood and filled them with the cheap tequila. "I'll go first. I'm twenty-six years old. I was fourteen when Dell got put on a bus. I was sixteen the year Sabina turned eighteen and moved into the rectory, and I was seventeen the year I got sent out of St. Brendan's with a duffel bag and a bus pass."

"Cass," Sabina said.

"I'm not done. I was the baby. I was the one you had to protect. Do you know what that feels like?"

Nobody answered.

"It feels like being a coat somebody carries from room to room." My voice cracked, and I let it. "You both left. Dell had to, fine. Sabina chose to. And I was the one holding the door."

"I didn't choose," Sabina said.

"You stayed."

"Yes, but..." Sabina began.

"You stayed in the building where she was lying about us, and you put on a gray suit and acted like you worked there."
