Chapter 20: Sabina Carries It In

Sabina's POV

Dell put the first green ledger into my hands at six in the morning, in Cass's kitchenette, and I almost dropped it.

"You carry it," she said.

I stared at her.

"I'm not asking you to hold it for us. I'm asking you to take it to the state auditor's regional office in Cleveland and put it in the auditor's hands."

"Why me?"

"Because you're the Foundation's office manager. You're the only one who can sign that it came from the Foundation's own basement." Dell's voice was level. "If Cass or I walk in, it's a grudge. If you walk in, it's a record."

"They'll know it was me."

"Yes," Dell said.

"Bernadette will know."

"She already suspects you," Cass said from the couch, wrapped in the afghan. "You dropped that key in front of forty donors."

"I dropped it by accident."

"You didn't, and she isn't stupid," Cass said.

I looked down at the ledger.

It was heavy and cracked, and it smelled of the basement.

For eleven years I had thought she would want to do this herself.

That she would need to be the one at the front, the one in the light, the one who was right.

I had been wrong about that, and I had been wrong for a long time.

She was handing me the thing she wanted most to hold.

"Dell," I said.

"Don't. If you cry, I will, and Cass will film it."

"I will absolutely film it," Cass said.

I laughed, and my eyes stung, and I put the ledger in my canvas tote and held it against my side.

"Rule two," Dell said. "Somebody knows where you are."
