Chapter 22: Chambers

On Monday the three of us sat in a row of green leather chairs in Judge Hasek's chambers, with our backs straight.

Cass wore her only blazer over a Pixies T-shirt.

Sabina wore the gray suit, a size too big.

I wore a clean shirt, and I had not told either of them where I had spent Saturday night.

Cass had looked at my neck in the car and said nothing, with enormous volume.

The Judge came in from a side door in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled.

He carried a pitcher of ice water.

"Ladies," he said warmly. "Thank you for coming. Water?"

"No," said Cass.

"Please," said Sabina, because Sabina never refused anything offered.

He poured her a glass.

Then he sat on the front edge of his desk, close enough to touch our knees, and smiled at us in turn.

I thought: he practices this.

"I want to begin by saying how much I admire the three of you," he said. "I've known you since you were babies in diapers. I held Cassidy at her father's memorial. I have kept your files for twenty-one years, and I have lost sleep over them."
