Chapter 35: Steps of the Foundation
The press conference started at six on the steps of the rectory, in the dark, under floodlights borrowed from a church carnival.
Seventy people stood on the lawn.
I saw donors in good coats, volunteers in Foundation lanyards, the pastor's widow, three camera crews, and Port Ansel women with their arms crossed.
Bernadette stood at the top of the steps with a lectern in front of her and her lawyer at her shoulder.
She had never looked better.
She wore her navy blazer, her silver bob was set, and the St. Brendan's medal lay on her chest.
"Thank you all for coming," she said. "I'll be brief."
Cass stood at my right, Sabina at my left.
We had come in through the side gate and stopped at the edge of the light.
"Not yet," Cass whispered. "Let her get started."
"For twenty-three years I have given my life to the girls of this house," Bernadette said. "I have held them through fevers. I have taught them to read. I have buried their pets and dried their tears."
