Chapter 7: The Marina

Dell's POV

I drove to the marina on Wednesday morning with my jaw clenched so hard that my teeth hurt.

Cass had told me what she said to him, and I'd told her she was right, and then I'd told her I was going anyway.

"You don't have to," she said.

"I do. It's my name on the order."

Gorski Marina was a long gray shed with an anchor on the sign, and forty boats in the water, and a crew of men in oilskins around a hull on a trailer.

They all went quiet when I got out of the car.

I had a feeling they'd watched the video.

I walked down the main dock in my work shoes, which were the only shoes I had that wasn't a sneaker.

He was at the end of the dock, standing on a gangway, tying off a line.

He turned when he heard me.

Stefan Gorski was thirty-three now, and broad, and sandy-bearded, and he stood with one foot a little forward as if the other hurt.

He had a marina sweatshirt, and blue eyes, and his mother's cheekbones.

I did not remember the face.

I remembered the hands.

"Delphine," he said.

"Dell."

"Dell." He wiped his palms on his jeans. "I figured one of you would come."

"Cass came."

"I know. She was right about all of it."

I looked at the men standing along the dock.

None of them had pretended to work.

"I'd like you to say it where they can hear," I said. "I'd like to know who's lying to me."
