Chapter 18: Two Other Mothers
The detective set it up for Wednesday, in a conference room with a long table and a box of tissues in the middle.
I got there first.
Jenna sat beside me with her arms folded, ready to fight anyone.
At ten the door opened, and a woman in a red coat came in.
She was about thirty-five, with dark circles under her eyes and a thin gold chain at her throat.
Behind her came a younger woman with a long brown braid, who stopped in the doorway and would not come farther.
The detective closed the door behind them.
"This is Willa," she said. "Willa, these are the women I told you about. They've agreed to speak to you first, before we start."
Nobody sat.
The woman in the red coat looked at me for a long time.
"I saw you on the stage," she said. "I watched it three times."
"I'm sorry," I said. "I should have found you sooner."
"You didn't know."
"I should have."
"No." She pulled out a chair and sat. "You should never have had to."
The young woman in the doorway finally came in.
She took the chair at the far end of the table, as far from the rest of us as she could get.
"I was in the Mama Circle for eight months," the woman in the red coat said. "I paid for the package. Gwen told me my daughter was breech and I shouldn't panic, and that I should rest until the contractions were close. She sent me a tea for the pain."
"Moon Blend."
"She called it her night blend."
She turned her wedding ring on her finger.
"My daughter was born at home, and she lived for nine hours."
Jenna made a small noise.
