Chapter 11: The Recording
Leah's POV
"Delaney," Adele said again, very softly. "Put that down."
Delaney did not put it down.
She stood at the little table in her green dress with the microphone in both hands.
She looked at the hundred and four faces in the barn.
"My name is Delaney Fisk," she said. "I worked for Lukas Halvorsen for two years.
"I was sleeping with him for most of them."
Nobody coughed.
"I sent the photograph. That part's true.
"I took it, and I sent it, and I'd do it again if I thought I'd get what I was promised."
"This is hysteria," Adele said to the crowd.
"But I didn't pick the night."
My heart was beating very hard now.
"I didn't pick the time either. Twenty to nine on the twenty-fifth. Somebody picked it for me."
She took her phone out of her coat pocket.
"I record every call she makes to me.
"She changes her mind, and then she says she never said what she said. I started doing it a year ago, because I'm good at my job."
"Delaney," Adele said.
It was the first time I heard her voice go up.
"Don't you dare."
Delaney tapped the screen.
Out of the little speaker, loud in the silent barn, came a woman's voice.
It was Adele's.
It was warm, and unhurried, and perfectly clear.
"Sunday, twenty to nine. I'll be across the table from her at Alder and Pine, with the letter in my purse.
"You send it from the bed, with the ring on his hand, so there's no mistaking it."
"Yes, Mrs. Halvorsen," said a younger voice. That was Delaney.
"She'll see it with me sitting right there. She'll come apart. And I'll be the one who holds her hand."
A pause.
"She's soft, Delaney. She'll take the kind thing before she takes the hard one.
