Chapter 14: Rule Three

Keith's POV

I sat at the desk in my study at midnight and read my own bank statements.

Mara stood behind my chair.

She didn't touch me, and I was glad, because I would have broken something.

"There," I said.

I pointed at the screen.

One transfer on the first of every month for twelve months, out of my savings and into an account called Maddock Holdings.

It was never the same amount, and each one was just small enough that I'd never have noticed.

Tonight, in one minute on the terrace, the rest had gone.

It was four point one million dollars, and she had used my own face to approve it.

"She held the phone up when she kissed me," I said. "I thought it was affection."

"Keith."

"I was happy about it. For about a second I was happy that my wife had kissed me."

I shut the laptop.

The room was quiet, and I could hear Vera's shower running through two walls.

"I'll call my lawyer in the morning," I said. "She can't have it. It's not hers."

"It's going to be hard to get back."

"I know."

I turned the chair around.

Mara's hair was still messy from my hands, and she looked tired and frightened.

I wanted to be gentle.

I couldn't, because something else had been sitting in my chest for two weeks and it had just found its way out.

"What are you holding?" I asked.

"I'm not holding anything."

"Mara."

"Keith, I just wanted to..."

"You walked into my house with a plan. I said it to you in the kitchen and you said you needed time. Pia hands you cables. You watch the clock in the living room like it owes you money."
