Chapter 24: Harlow House
Melinda was in the hall in her father's flannel shirt before Posy reached the end of the corridor.
"Bad dream?" she asked.
"The car one." Posy rubbed her eyes with her fist. "The one where I'm on the stairs."
"Come here."
She picked her up, though Posy was too big for it, and carried her back to bed.
She sat on the edge of the mattress and rubbed her back until her breathing went slow.
"Is Mr. Zachary in your room?"
"Yes."
"Is he going to stay?"
"He's going to stay for breakfast. Then we'll see about Tuesday."
Posy gave a sleepy, satisfied sigh.
"Okay," she said. "I like him. He's good at trees."
In the morning the whole household went down to the front gate.
Crane Estates stood over the drive in brushed steel on a white post. Melinda had walked under it every day since the arrest and had never once read it as her own.
Zachary fitted the crowbar under the top edge of the sign.
"Ready?"
"Do it."
The post gave with a groan, and the sign came off in a shower of old paint.
Posy cheered.
He laid it face down on the grass. It was surprisingly light.
Dorothy came down the drive with something large in her arms, wrapped in an old quilt.
"I found it in your father's barn, behind the hay," she said. "He had it made for our wedding. Leland told the movers to burn it."
She unwrapped it on the lawn.
It was a plank of dark oak, carved by hand, with two words cut deep in the grain.
Harlow House.
Melinda knelt and touched the letters with her fingertips.
"The movers didn't burn it."
"The movers hated Leland," Dorothy said. "I gave them each fifty dollars."
