Chapter 26: The Violet Dragon
Isveth stared at the scales on her fingers.
"No," she said.
She rubbed at them.
More came.
They spread down her neck, over her collarbone, across the amethysts.
"No. No, this isn't right. The crown doesn't do this. It didn't do this to you!"
She whirled on me across the hall.
"What did you do to it?"
"Nothing," I said. "I told you. I told you in front of everyone."
Her fingers curled.
They kept curling, longer and longer, until the nails were hooks of violet bone.
She screamed.
It started as her own voice.
It didn't end as one.
The court broke.
Lords and ladies went for the doors in a mass of tails and silk, tearing past each other, shrieking.
The spear captain was the first one out. I saw his scarred jaw go through the door ahead of a dozen ladies.
The scales poured over my sister.
Her jaw pushed out. Her violet hair went stiff and sharp, into a crest of spines.
Her purple tail grew, and grew, and lashed, and knocked a row of shell pillars flat.
When it was done there was no princess in the middle of the Choosing Hall.
