Chapter 14: What He Never Sent

Keir's POV

I waited across the street from her mother's firm for forty minutes with the engine off.

When Millicent came out, she walked straight past the car.

I got out and followed her to the corner.

"Don't," she said, without turning. "I can't be touched right now."

"Then I won't."

"I told them. All of it. She said she did it for me."

"Do you want me to take you home?"

"I want to walk."

I let her walk.

Finn picked her up two blocks later, because I had texted him the street, and she got in his truck without arguing.

That was when I stopped being able to hold it in my chest.

I went back to my office, shut the door, and opened the bottom drawer of my desk.

There was a list in it, with nine dates, and beside each date the same address in Brookline.

Nine Octobers, nine letters, and she never called.

I had decided she read them and chose her mother's money.

I took her in anyway, and I called it a move against the Winslows.

I put my forehead on the desk.

I regret that I let her kiss me before she knew whose hands they were.

The intercom buzzed.

"Mr. Stroud," my assistant said. "Richard Winslow is in the lobby. He doesn't have an appointment."

I sat up.

"Does he have anyone with him?"

"No, sir. He's alone. He asked me not to call security."

"Send him up."

Richard walked in carrying his own coat.

He had lost weight in two weeks.
