Chapter 15: Nine Envelopes
Millicent's POV
The house in Brookline was dark when Finn dropped me at the curb.
"I'll wait," he said.
"You don't have to."
"I'm parked right here with the engine on. Wave if you need me to do something illegal."
"Finn."
"Something mildly illegal."
I almost smiled.
I had a key I hadn't used in six years, and I used it.
My mother sat at the kitchen table with a cardboard box in front of her, the kind people carry out of offices.
She hadn't turned on a light.
Her pearls lay beside the box, unclasped, in a little heap.
"They told you already," I said.
"The partners voted to place me on leave this afternoon." Her voice was dry. "Richard's lawyers called an hour later to end our contract. I have had a busy day."
"Where are the letters?"
She didn't ask which letters.
"In the study safe," she said. "The combination is your father's birthday."
"You used his birthday."
"It was the only number I never forgot."
I stood in the doorway with my hand on the frame.
"You hated him," I said. "You said so after the funeral."
"I did hate him. He left us with a mortgage and a stack of unpaid bills." She laughed, and it wasn't a laugh. "He was late for everything, Millicent. Do you know what he was carrying when he died? Flowers, for a school recital he'd almost forgotten."
"He didn't forget."
"No," my mother said. "He didn't."
I went to the study alone.
The safe was behind the books, where it had always been.
