Chapter 15: No Money

The chairman's lawyer caught me by the coat check at midnight.

He was kind about it. He thought I already knew.

"Mr. Maddox has been very generous to Ms. Dalton," he said. "The referral to the district attorney is withdrawn, and her counsel is paid through the spring.

He's bought her a ticket home to Ohio, too, and covered her lease. I wanted to say how few men would."

I thanked him.

I rode to the penthouse in the back of the car with my hands in my lap, and I didn't say a word to the driver or to the man beside me.

Elliot's door was open again.

He walked in ahead of me and stood at the long windows with his jacket off.

I shut the door and stayed against it.

"Did you pay for her lawyer?" I said.

"Yes."

"And her lease, and a ticket home."

He turned around.

"She has nobody in the city. She was going to be arrested on camera in a green dress, and I thought..."

"You thought."

"I thought I would spare her."

"It was my name on that email," I said. "My name, Elliot. My login. My face on the news for three days."

"I know."

"You didn't ask me."

"I knew what you would say."

"Then you should have let me say it!"

My voice went up and cracked off the glass, and he took it without moving.

I pushed away from the door and crossed the floor.

"Rule three," I said. "No deciding for me."

"I know the rule."

"Rule four. No money."

"I know the rule, Hallie."

"You know all the rules. You've broken every one in two weeks." I stopped a foot from him. "Send me the invoice, boss."

Something moved in his face.

It wasn't hurt. It was nearer to hunger.

"Say that again," he said.

"Send me the invoice."

He took me by the back of the neck and kissed me.
