Chapter 12: Ten Seconds
I sat straight up in the dark.
"Call 911," I said.
"I can't." Valerie's breath hitched. "If the police come, he'll know it was me. He'll take the baby. He said he'd take the baby."
"Where is he?"
"New York. He flies back at six." She was crying so hard she hiccuped. "I went down to get the stroller out of my car and they were just there. Gas cans, Clem. Three of them. Why would he need three?"
I looked at Margo asleep in the bassinet.
The house burns.
No one inside survives.
"Is your son with you?"
"He's right here. He's asleep. Please. You're the only one I can call. Everyone else works for him."
I knew exactly what that felt like.
I hated that she knew it too.
"I'm coming," I said. "Don't touch anything."
I called Cormac.
It rang out. He'd been on a twenty-four before the market and he slept after one.
I texted him while I pulled my jeans on.
"Valerie called. Gas cans in the Kingsford garage. Going to look. Call me."
Then I carried Margo downstairs in her blanket.
The night crew was in the kitchen playing cards. The lieutenant looked up and saw my face and put his hand down.
"What do you need?"
"Two hours. Can you watch her?"
He held out his arms.
"I've got four nieces," he said. "Go."
The cab took twenty minutes to Brookline.
The Kingsford house sat on its hill in the dark, three stories of old brick and white trim, with the east wing black and shuttered at the far end.
I'd lived there nine months.
I'd never once been in that wing.
Valerie buzzed the gate before I could ring.
She met me at the side door in a white robe, her son on her shoulder, her face blotchy and wet.
